The chartering members of Eta Nu Sigma Alumnae chapter were: Michelle
Arransky-Orroyo, Angela Heres, Zelica Henry, Cheryl Barnes-Horton, Grace
Powell, Judith Ricot and Adrienne Simmons.
When the chapter was chartered in 1991, its primary
purpose was to foster sisterhood among its local membership, while
providing community service, scholarship, and empowerment to communities
throughout Brooklyn and Queens, in New York City. Since 1991, some of
Eta Nu Sigma's service activities have included its Wee Savers program,
which provides financial workshops to youth throughout Brooklyn,
Operation Big Book Bag, during which the chapter donates hundreds of
dollars worth of school supplies to underprivileged students and annual participation in New York
Cares Day and AIDS Walk New York.
Eta Nu Sigma's annual hallmark activity is its Mother's
Day Scholarship Jazz Brunch, organized to raise scholarship funds, which
are awarded to promising college-bound youth. In addition, the brunch
also honors matriarchs in families and neighborhoods as well as organizations
that contribute to the lives of youth. Previous award recipients include
CBS 2 News New York Anchor, Shon Gables, and Dr. Lenora Fulani, Former
1988 and 1992 US Presidential Candidate and Founder of the All-star Project.
In 2005, Eta Nu Sigma honored Della Britton-Baeza, President and CEO of
The Jackie Robinson Foundation, for her outstanding contributions to the
communities we live in.
All members of Eta Nu Sigma chapter possess at least a
Bachelor's degree, with many having achieved Master's Degrees in disciplines
spanning from business to education. Our members also represent many professions,
from healthcare to finance, to education as well as law. The more we know,
the more we can help our communities. Eta Nu Sigma Alumnae Chapter is
also an active member of the Pan-Hellenic Council of Greater New York
and the Brooklyn Women's Network.
